M&R 21day practice work: Week 2

OUTCOME: Measurement: volume,  length, distance, mass.

Dear parents. When we deal with measurement, volume and capacity, length and mass we have to involve all the practical elements we possibly can. Unfortunately, because of the times we are living in and the use of technology, learners have very little time to explore with these mathematical concepts both in the classroom and at home. The key to success in this area is to allow them to experiment with measurement, volume, length, distance, etc.

During this week I want you to get those measuring tapes, rulers, measuring cups out and allow your kids to USE them while you cook, bake, make breakfast, or spend time outside gardening, walking the perimeter of the yard, counting their steps, etc.  It is also great for them to start playing around with estimations. I.e. how many cups of water do you think you will you need to fill a 2 litre bottle water or how many steps will it take from the one side of the room to the other. Measure a step in cm’s and see if you can add  the steps up in order to convert to meters. Ask the dads to practically illustrate a m by taking a big step and allowing your kids to measure the length of the step. (Hierso moet jy reg skat anders gaan jy jou kinders verkeerd leer ;))


Pack out your tupperware! Ask kids to stack the same size containers or to fit the smaller containers into the bigger ones, sort the lids , etc. almost like building lego!

Get the rulers out and ask them to measure things such as the TV remote!  Show them the difference on the ruler between mm’s and cm’s. 

Get the measuring jug out and fill the containers with water … ask them questions about volume: millilitres and litres to test their knowledge.

When you sit at the breakfast table, ask questions! How many grams of cereal in the cereal box? How many litres on the milk carton? Make this as practical and FUN as you possibly can. When you ask questions you get learners to THINK for themselves and you are actually allowing the learning process to flow naturally versus just sharing information.
